About ABR

Australian Book Review (ABR) is Australia's oldest and premier literary review. Created in 1961, and now based in Melbourne and Adelaide, it publishes reviews, essays, commentaries and creative writing. With its national title, scope and readership, this monthly magazine is committed to highlighting the full range of critical and creative writing from around Australia.

ABR is a fully independent and not-for-profit organisation. Its primary aims are several: to foster high critical standards; to provide an outlet for fine new writing; and to contribute to the preservation of literary values and a full appreciation of Australia's literary heritage.

Why should I subscribe?

  • Join ABR's growing readership here and overseas.
  • Save 22.5% off the cover price, and have your magazine delivered safely to you door each month.
  • Receive information about ABR events, and discounts to attend them (and sometimes free tickets).
  • Enjoy a lively general magazine for the well-read and well-informed.
  • Pay less when entering ABR competitions.

Critical independence
ABR — a non-profit organisation — is fully independent. Our critiques are unfettered by commercial or institutional considerations. In an age of shrinking diversity of media ownership — and reduced coverage of Australian writing in other publications — ABR is essential reading if you are seeking broad, independent coverage of the latest books and ideas.

Sponsors and supporters
In 2007, ABR had the pleasure of announcing its exclusive corporate sponsor, Ord Minnett, a leading wealth management group.
In 2002 ABR welcomed La Trobe University as its Chief Sponsor. That year the National Library of Australia also became our National Sponsor. Recently, both these sponsorships were extended for three more years. Flinders University became another key sponsor in 2005. These important partnerships have distinct creative and intellectual benefits for the magazine. They also attest to ABR's strong profile in the Australian literary culture.

The Australia Council, through its Literature Board, and Arts Victoria generously assist ABR.
