A-Muse Theatre Group Inc. A Victorian Site

The A-Muse Theatre Group Inc. was formed in 2004 by Michelle Weaver and Helen Walker, two playwrights and co-writers of "Beyond Mediocrity", the story of an unhappy teacher's journey as she redefines herself and her life. After having written "Beyond Mediocrity" to balance what the pair saw as a lack of strong female characters and stories in theatre, Helen and Michelle discovered their next obstacle - a lack of support and an absence of funding for community theatre. True to style, the pair confronted this lack of support with relish and created their own support - A-Muse Theatre Group Inc.

Comfort Zone A Victorian Site

The Arts Minister’s coming and the media’s on their way, but still there’s not enough balloons for the launch of next year’s theatre season! In the upstairs office of a small inner city theatre, an ugly battle for ultimate power is in full swing. The Artistic Director, the Yes-man, the writer and God forbid, even the cleaning lady are slamming doors and opening windows in this fast paced, action-packed tour de farce that takes a knife to this incestuous theatre industry. Comfort Zone tells the story of a woman with more power than she deserves, whose lost touch with reality of the industry she claims to have single-handedly created. Deirdre James is a protagonist clinging to the last bastion of power (let alone integrity) and in between programming her friend’s work and shagging the Art’s Minister’s PA, she flaunts herself with an air of superiority wrapped round a Greenroom Award. This is a woman who can make or break the drug and alcohol addictions of many aspiring playwrights. The two playwrights, Darren Brealey and Stuart Pursell have brought their individual talents together to produce this witty and farcical production. Brealey first came to public attention in 1996 when his play, The Meeting Place was produced during the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The Meeting Place was a critical and public success: “The script never shies away from the confronting fundamental issues in family and society … it’s a fine result for first timers Darren Brealey and Director Justin Conkey” (The Melbourne Times). Brealey won a Special Recommendation Award in the Melbourne Fringe Performance Art Awards. In 1996 Pursell received a grant from the Queen’s Trust of Australia to produce and tour, Syncopated Time throughout Melbourne’s metropolitan secondary schools. Prior to production this script had received a rehearsed reading at both St Martin’s Victorian Centre for Youth Arts and the St Kilda Writer’s Festival and was nominated for the Wal Cherry Award.
