Connecting communities through information technology
1) Why are the hosting and email services closing?
The State Library of Victoria (SLV) has undertaken a review of our web hosting and email services. This is part of a broader process to re-align the SLV’s services with the broader strategy of the library. The closure of the remaining Vicnet services is the final phase of a Board decision that was taken in 2009 which resulted initially in the closure of the Vicnet ISP (Internet Service Provider) products.
Given the SLV's core focus on Victoria's historical information and support for the public library network, the provision of a broad range of hosting and email services is outside this strategic direction and places a significant demand on current resources. As a result, the former Vicnet general hosting and email services will close on January 31, 2014.
We would like to thank all of our hosting and email clients for their patronage.
2) When will Vicnet web hosting service cease?

Please Note: Services to Historical Societies and Victorian Libraries will continue. There is no need for these organisations to change anything.

Once you have clarified your hosting requirements, you can search online for providers and then match your requirements with the offerings from the various hosting providers.
As you consider hosting providers you may also like to search for customer reviews of that service. There are online Forums that discuss “Web Site Hosting" options" such as those found at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ and http://www.ask.com/answers/
<< NOTE: You can customise’ your search to ‘match’ your requirements. For example, you may search for "community web hosting" or "web hosting". You may also search for "free hosting with FTP access" if you are interested in finding options that will enable you to move an existing html website. A search for "Social Networking for Groups" could be useful if you wish to explore a presence on social media. >>
If your new website will have a new web address or URL then we can put a 301 Redirect in place to redirect visitors and update search engines. So please let us know your new URL and we shall put this in place until 31 May 2014.
<<NOTE: Some websites may have elements that are no longer supported because they are ‘out of date’. You may need to consider your options with your new provider. To do this you may need to provide FTP access. If you have a website with a database we can provide access via the PHPMyAdmin interface. Please contact us if you have questions about this. >>
<<Note: Before you initiate a transfer make sure that your Registrant Contact details are up to date. Search the whois lookup at http://whois.ausregistry.com.au/whois/whois_local.jsp? to check your registrant contact details for your domain name.>>
7) I also have a mailing list that uses ‘mailman’. How do I find another mailing list service provider?

Unfortunately you aren't able to take your @vicnet.net.au email address with you to a new provider.
We can place an email forward on your vicnet email address up to 31 December 2014, so please let us know your new email address so that we can set up the email forwarding. Please let people in your address book know about your new address and perhaps consider updating your email signature with the new address.
This offer closes on Monday 10 February 2014.
Please let us know if you would like to choose this option and we will send you the application form for WebCentral which details their service offering and contract.
Thank you for using our services in the past and we wish you well with your future web endeavours.
