1)    Why are the hosting and email services closing?

The State Library of Victoria (SLV) has undertaken a review of our web hosting and email services. This is part of a broader process to re-align the SLV’s services with the broader strategy of the library. The closure of the remaining Vicnet services is the final phase of a Board decision that was taken in 2009 which resulted initially in the closure of the Vicnet ISP (Internet Service Provider) products.

The Vicnet services were established in 1994-95 when there were few alternatives. Now there are a wide range of options for people wanting to publish online. As these alternatives have become increasingly popular and more affordable, demand for the Vicnet hosting and email services has declined. This in turn, has resulted in ongoing strain upon SLV funding and resources. Fewer people have been using these services and the majority of former users have found other alternatives.

Given the SLV's core focus on Victoria's historical information and support for the public library network, the provision of a broad range of hosting and email services is outside this strategic direction and places a significant demand on current resources. As a result, the former Vicnet general hosting and email services will close on January 31, 2014.

We would like to thank all of our hosting and email clients for their patronage.

2)    When will Vicnet web hosting service cease?
The web hosting service will cease on 31 January 2014. If you require a 'hosting' or 'email' service after 31 January 2014 you will need to organise a new provider.

Please contact us

Please Note: Services to Historical Societies and Victorian Libraries will continue. There is no need for these organisations to change anything.

4)    How do I know if a web hosting provider can meet my hosting needs?
The "Forward IT" website offers tips that may help you clarify your hosting requirements.
See http://www.forwardit.sa.gov.au/home/home_business/finding_a_web_hosting_service

Once you have clarified your hosting requirements, you can search online for providers and then match your requirements with the offerings from the various hosting providers.

As you consider hosting providers you may also like to search for customer reviews of that service. There are online Forums that discuss “Web Site Hosting" options" such as those found at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/   and  http://www.ask.com/answers/

<< NOTE: You can customise’ your search to ‘match’ your requirements. For example, you may search for "community web hosting" or "web hosting".  You may also search for "free hosting with FTP access" if you are interested in finding options that will enable you to move an existing html website. A search for "Social Networking for Groups" could be useful if you wish to explore a presence on social media. >>

5)    I have found a new hosting service. Can I move my existing website to the new provider?
While most websites can be moved, you will need to discuss the options with your new provider.

If your new website will have a new web address or URL then we can put a 301 Redirect in place to redirect visitors and update search engines. So please let us know your new URL and we shall put this in place until 31 May 2014.

<<NOTE: Some websites may have elements that are no longer supported because they are ‘out of date’. You may need to consider your options with your new provider. To do this you may need to provide FTP access. If you have a website with a database we can provide access via the PHPMyAdmin interface. Please contact us if you have questions about this. >>
