Domain Names: Frequently Asked Questions

I've sent in my application for a domain name - what do I do next?

Vicnet will contact you approximately 1 month prior to the expiry of your domain name. You will be asked to provide permission for Vicnet to renew your domain name and for Vicnet to invoice or charge your credit card for the renewal fee. The cost of renewal is the same as the cost for registration. Once Vicnet has received your permission to renew the domain name on your behalf, Vicnet will complete the renewal and will either invoice you or charge your credit card.

How do I update my contact details with my registrar?

Its important that you regularly check the contact details listed with your domain name registrar to ensure that they are correct and up to date. Organisational representatives should provide the registrar with a generic e-mail address for their domain name rather than a personal e-mail address. If a staff member is unavailable for any reason, having a generic e-mail address will ensure that the organisation does not miss important information about the domain name.

Who Is My Registrar?

Your registrar is the operator of the registry with which your domain name is registered. For .AU domain name owners, you can find out who your registrar is by visiting the AusRegistry site http://www.ausregistry.com.au/ and using the WhoIs? function at the top of the page. For other domain names you can use the following sites http://whois.melbourneit.com.au/ or http://www.nsiregistry.net/whois/. For .ORG.AU names get your password from this site first: http://admin.auda.org.au.

Can I set up sub-domains?

There is no DNS Hosting charge for additional subdomains, or hostnames, of a domain name hosted with Vicnet. An additional Virtual Web Server fee or virtual mail server fee will apply for each additional subdomain or hostname depending upon the service required. When applying please specify if you require http://www.subname.name.com/ and/or http://subname.name.com/. To apply, download and complete the hosting and domain name application form and return it to Vicnet.

How do I transfer my domain name to Vicnet?

If you supply Vicnet with your domain name registry key, we can update your technical details for you so that your domain name will be hosted at Vicnet. If you don't have your registry key, you can request one from the registry. It will be sent to the listed contact details. If you would like to keep your domain name hosted at your provider, simply provide them with the IP address of your new virtual web server at Vicnet.

What are Vicnet's Domain Name Server addresses

If your website is hosted with Vicnet then your Domain Name Server entry with your domain name registrar will need to point to: ns.vicnet.net.au and ns2.vicnet.net.au.
