Macintosh - Eudora 3

Basic Configuration

Once you have installed Eudora 3 for Macintosh, it is quite easy to configure it to download your VICNET email. All configuration is done from the Settings box so let's start there:

  1. Open Eudora 3 by double clicking on your hard drive, double clicking on the Eudora Light Folder and double click on the Eudora Light icon
  2. Select the Special menu and then select Settings. The Settings box will present the Getting Started category highlighted as follows:
  3. Type in the following:
    • Real name: this is where you type the name that people see when you send an email to them. This setting is not technical and can essentially be anything.
    • POP account: replace jcitizen in the above example with your own username and add @mail.vicnet.net.au onto that.
    • Return address: replace jcitizen with your own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol) and add @vicnet.net.au onto that.

NOTE: Eudora 3 is the only popular email program where you are required to type in your absolute full email address, including the @mail.vicnet.net.au suffix. More recent versions of Eudora do not require this. Don't forget that when quoting your email address to correspondents, you only need to quote the jcitizen@vicnet.net.au format.

  4. Next click on the Hosts category.
  5. Eudora 3 will remember the POP account details you entered in the Getting Started category. Therefore you only need to add the SMTP setting to this Hosts category. The VICNET SMTP server address is mail.vicnet.net.au
  6. Next click on the Checking Mail category.
  7. All of the above settings are optional however VICNET has found that some of them can streamline the use of Eudora. For instance, if you do not want to continually type in your password, click the Save password option.

Also, if you would like Eudora 3 to automically check your mail at preset intervals, you would set the Check for mail every X minutes option. However an important point is that after setting Eudora 3 to automatically check for new email, Eudora 3 will check whether you have an internet connection or not. The option to check only when a internet connection is present can only be found in more recent version of Eudora. VICNET recommends the following settings for the Checking Mail category in Eudora 3:

      • Send on check - ticked
      • Save password - ticked
      • Leave mail on server - unticked
      • Authentication style: Passwords
  8. Next click the Sending Mail category and you'll see the following:
  9. Again Eudora 3 will remember the Return address and SMTP server details. Most other settings here are optional.

  10. Ensure you tick the box next to Keep copies of outgoing mail

Those are all the settings you need, your installation of Eudora 3 is now configured for use with your VICNET email account!
