Spam Filtering

Spam Methodology

Recently Vicnet implemented some new spam (junk) e-mail checking software.

Both outgoing and incoming e-mail is checked.

E-mails that have been classified as spam will have *****SPAM***** inserted in the subject header of the e-mail. Spam detection is not perfect, members should be aware that the software will occasionally tag legitimate e-mail as spam.

You may wish to filter these e-mails into a separate folder in your e-mail program or delete these e-mails.

Configuring Mail 1.3 to deal with SPAM is quite easy. Here's how it's done.

  1. Click the Mail shortcut in the dock
  2. Click the Mail menu
  3. Click Preferences
  4. Ensure Rules is selected
  5. Click Add Rule
  6. Within the Description box, type *****SPAM*****
  7. Within the Criteria section dropdown menu, select Subject from the first menu
  8. Within the Criteria section, dropdown menu select Contains from the second menu
  9. Within the box, type *****SPAM*****

    Options

If you wish to delete all email marked *****SPAM***** from the server...

    1. Within the Perform the following Actions drop down menu select, click Delete message
    2. Proceed to step 10

If you wish to download all email marked *****SPAM***** and store it in a separate folder...

    1. Click the File menu
    2. Click New Viewer Window
    3. Click the Mailbox menu
    4. Click New Mailbox...

    5. Within the name box, type *****SPAM*****
    6. Click OK
    7. From the Perform the following Actions drop down menu select Move Message
    8. From the mailbox dropdown menu Select *****SPAM*****
  10. Click OK
  11. Click Close

Those are all the settings you need, your installation of Mail 1.3 is now configured for use with your VICNET email account!
