Basic configuration of Outlook Express 4 is quite easy, here is how:

  1. Double click on the hard drive
  2. Double click on the Microsoft Internet Applications folder
  3. Double click on the Outlook Express 4.0 folder
  4. Double click on the icon for Outlook Express
  5. Select the Edit menu, then Preferences
  6. OE - Edit - Preferences - accounts - email

  7. On the left hand side of the screen, in the Accounts section, click on E-mail
  8. Ensure the settings are as follows:

    • Full name type the name that people will see when you send an email to them. This setting is not technical and can essentially be anything.
    • E-mail address Replace jcitizen in the above example with your own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol) and add @vicnet.net.au
    • SMTP server: mail.vicnet.net.au
    • Account ID replace jcitizen in the above example with your own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol)
    • POP Server: mail.vicnet.net.au
    • Save Password *******
    • Account name type in VICNET

  9. Click Advanced
    • The only box which should be ticked is Allow online access (shows account in the folder list)
    • Click OK

    • Make sure you have a tick in the box next to Display this directory service folder in the folder list

  12. On the left hand side of the screen in the Outlook Express section click on General
  13. The rest of the settings are optional however VICNET has found that some of them can streamline the use of Outlook Express. For example ticking When sending save a copy in the Sent Mail folder means a copy of all your sent mail will be saved. Also, you can set Outlook Express 4 to Check for mail every X number of minutes. In other words, check your email account for new email automatically. VICNET recommends the following settings for the General category:
    • Require confimation when deleting - ticked
    • When sending, save a copy in Sent Mail folder - ticked
    • Send messages immediately - ticked
    • Use file helpers to view attachments - ticked
    • Tick the box next to Check for mail every and type in 15 in the box next to minutes. In the box next to Get type in 50

  14. On the left hand side of the screen in the Outlook Express section click on Message Composition
    • Click on the circle next to Plain text in the Mail sending format section
    • Click on the circle next to Plain text in the News sending format section
    • Untick the box next to Reply to messages using the format in which they were sent

  15. On the left hand side of the screen in the Network section, click on proxies and you will see the following:
    • Click in the circle next to Enabled
    • Protocol should be set to All
    • Method should be set to Normal
    • Address: proxy.vicnet.net.au
    • Port: 8080
  • Click OK
  • Those are all the settings you need. Your installation of Outlook Express 4 is now configured to send and receive e-mail!
