Spam Filtering

Spam Methodology

Recently Vicnet implemented some new spam (junk) e-mail checking software.

Both outgoing and incoming e-mail is checked.

E-mails that have been classified as spam will have *****SPAM***** inserted in the subject header of the e-mail. Spam detection is not perfect, members should be aware that the software will occasionally tag legitimate e-mail as spam.

You may wish to filter these e-mails into a separate folder in your e-mail program or delete these e-mails.

Configuring Outlook Express 4 to deal with SPAM is quite easy. Here's how it's done.

  1. Double Click on the Harddisk
  2. Double Click on Microsoft Internet Applications
  3. Double Click on Outlook Express 4
  4. Click the Tools menu
  5. Select Inbox Rules
  6. Click New Rule
  7. In the name of rule type SPAM
  8. In the criteria section select subject from the drop down menu
  9. Within the adjacent field next to contains, type *****SPAM*****
  10. Options

If you wish to delete all email marked *****SPAM***** from the server...

    1. Within the Action section, click the first drop down list and click select Delete message
    2. Proceed to step 10

If you wish to download all email marked *****SPAM***** and store it in a separate folder...

    1. Click OK
    2. Click File Menu
    3. Select New
    4. Select New Folder
    5. Type in Spam
    6. Click OK
    7. Click Tools Menu
    8. Select Inbox Rules
    9. Double Click on Spam
    10. Within the Actions criteria, select Move message
    11. Within the adjacent button that appears select SPAM
    12. Select New
  11. Click OK
  12. Close Inbox rules window
  13. Click the File menu
  14. Click Quit

Those are all the settings you need. Outlook Express 4 will now deal with email marked *****SPAM***** automatically for you!
