What is a mailing list?

A mailing list is a collection of addresses to which a copy of a message can be sent. In our case we are talking about electronic mailing lists. A mailing list enables each person on the list to receive a copy of every message sent to the list. New members can add their email address to the list. Existing members can e-mail their message to the list. Each list must have a moderator who plays a role in managing the list functions. To participate all you need is an e-mail address.

What is a Vicnet mailing list?

The mailing list is operated at Vicnet using a system called mailman. Anyone can apply to establish a mailing list on Vicnet. We would be pleased to answer any questions about establishing a new mailing list.

Vicnet is currently running version 2.1.5 of Mailman.

Mailman is free software for managing electronic mail discussion and e-newsletter lists. Mailman is integrated with the web, making it easy for users to manage their accounts and for list owners to administer their lists. Mailman supports built-in archiving, automatic bounce processing, content filtering, digest delivery, spam filters, and more. See the features page for details here.
