Windows Help - Eudora 6

Basic Configuration

Once you have installed Eudora 6 for Windows, it is quite easy to configure it to download your VICNET email. All configuration is done from the Options box so let's start there:

  1. Open Eudora 6 by clicking the Start button, selecting Programs then Eudora, then Eudora again.
  2. Select the Tools menu and then select Options. The Options box will present the Getting Started category highlighted like so:
  3. Type in the following:
    • Real name: this is where you type the name that people see when you send an email to them. This setting is not technical and can essentially be anything.
    • Return address: replace jcitizen with your own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol) and add @vicnet.net.au onto that.
    • Mail Server (Incoming): mail.vicnet.net.au
    • Login Name: replace jcitizen with your own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol).
    • SMTP Server (Outgoing): mail.vicnet.net.au

  4. Now click on the Checking Mail category and you will see the following settings appear:
  5. Eudora 6 will copy both the Mail Server and Login Name details from the Getting Started category.

All of the above settings are optional however VICNET has found that some of them can streamline the use of Eudora. For example ticking Save Password means you will not have to re-type your password every time you check your mail. Also, you can set Eudora 6 to Check for mail everyX number of minute(s). In other words, check your email account for new email automatically. VICNET recommends the following settings for the Checking Mail category:

    • Check for mail every 15 minute(s)
    • Don't check without a network connection - ticked
    • Send on check - ticked
    • Save password - ticked
    • Secure Sockets when Receiving - Never

  6. Next click the Sending Mail category and you'll see the following:
  7. Again Eudora 6 will copy the Return address and SMTP server details. Most other settings here are optional however for smooth emailing, VICNET recommends the following settings for the Sending Mail category:

    • Allow authentication - ticked
    • Immediate send - ticked
    • Send on check - ticked
    • Secure Sockets when Sending - Never

Those are all the settings you need, your installation of Eudora 6 is now configured for use with your VICNET email account!
