Spam Filtering

Spam Methodology

Recently Vicnet implemented some new spam (junk) e-mail checking software.

Both outgoing and incoming e-mail is checked.

E-mails that have been classified as spam will have *****SPAM***** inserted in the subject header of the e-mail. Spam detection is not perfect, members should be aware that the software will occasionally tag legitimate e-mail as spam.

You may wish to filter these e-mails into a separate folder in your e-mail program or delete these e-mails.

Configuring Outlook 2003 to deal with SPAM is quite easy. Here's how it's done.

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Microsoft Outlook
  4. Click the Tools menu
  5. Click Rules and Alerts
  6. Click New Rule
  7. Click Start creating a rule from a template
  8. In Step 1: Select a template, Click Move messages with specific words in the subject to a folder
  9. In Step 2: Edit the rule description, Click with specific words in the subject

  10. Within the Specify words or phrases to search for in the subject: box, type *****SPAM*****

  15. In the Name field type SPAM
  16. Click Ok
  17. Click Ok

  19. Click Next
  20. Options

    2. Click Next
    3. Click Next
    4. All mail tagged with *****SPAM***** will be deleted

  21. Click Finish

  25. Click Next
  26. Tick Run this rule now on messages already in "Inbox"
  27. Click Finish
