Windows - Outlook Express 6

Basic Configuration

Basic configuration of Outlook Express 6 is quite easy. Here's how it's done.

Creating a mail setting using the Internet Connection Wizard

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Outlook Express
  4. Click the Tools menu, then click Accounts
  5. Click the Mail tab
  6. Click Add then click Mail from the pop out menu
  7. In the Display name box, type the name that people will see when you send an email to them. This setting is not technical and can essentially be anything.
  8. Click Next
  9. Select I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use
  10. Within the E-mail address box, type your email address
  11. Click Next
  12. For Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server, type mail.vicnet.net.au
  13. For Outgoing mail (SMTP) server, type mail.vicnet.net.au
  14. Click Next
  15. In the Account name box, type your username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol)
  16. Type your password in the Password box
  17. Click Next
  18. In the Internet mail account name box, type your username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol), a space, then (VICNET).
  19. Click Next
  20. Where asked Which method do you want to use to connect to the Internet, select Connect using my phone line.
  21. Click Next
  22. If you already have a VICNET dial-up connection created, select Use an existing dial-up connection and select the name of your VICNET dial-up connection.
  23. Click Next
  24. Click Finish
  25. Editing an existing mail setting

  26. Click the Tools menu, then clickAccounts
  27. Click the Mail tab
  28. Each row here represents a separate mail account. If you have more than one email address, you will see multiple rows here.

  29. Select the setting you wish to edit by clicking on the name of the setting under the Account column.
  30. Click Properties
  31. Most of the settings on this page are optional. For a basic account set up, VICNET recommends the following:

    • Mail account: give this mail account setting a meaningful name to help distinguish between it and other mail account settings you may create. Replace jcitizen in the above example with you own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol) and type (VICNET) after that.
    • Name: this is where you type the name that people see when you send an email to them. This setting is not technical and can essentially be anything.
    • E-mail address: Replace jcitizen in the above example with you own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol) and add @vicnet.net.au
    • Reply address: this is only necessary if your return address is different to your E-mail address. For a standard VICNET mail account, the settings are not different, hence a Reply address is not necessary.
    • Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive - ticked

  32. Click the Servers tab
  33. Ensure the settings on this Servers tab are as follows:
    • Outgoig mail (SMTP): mail.vicnet.net.au
    • Incoming mail (POP3): mail.vicnet.net.au
    • Account name: replace jcitizen in the above example with your own username (the first part of your email address, the bit before the @ symbol).
    • Password: ********
    • Log on using Secure Password Authentication - unticked
    • My server requires authentication - unticked.

Advanced Options

  1. Click More Settings ... button
  2. Click on the Advanced tab
  3. Make sure the Leave copy a of messages on the server option is not ticked as this can cause mailbox full messages to be delivered to your mailbox.

  4. Click Ok
  5. Click Close

Those are all the settings you need. Your copy of Outlook Express 6 is now configured for use with your VICNET email account!
