Spam Filtering

Spam Methodology

Recently Vicnet implemented some new spam (junk) e-mail checking software.

Both outgoing and incoming e-mail is checked.

E-mails that have been classified as spam will have *****SPAM***** inserted in the subject header of the e-mail. Spam detection is not perfect, members should be aware that the software will occasionally tag legitimate e-mail as spam.

You may wish to filter these e-mails into a separate folder in your e-mail program or delete these e-mails.

Configuring Outlook Express 6 to deal with SPAM is quite easy. Here's how it's done:

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Outlook Express
  4. Click the Tools menu
  5. Click Message Rules
  6. From the pop-out menu click Mail...
  7. Within section 1 of the New Mail Rule window, ensure Where the Subject line contains specific words is ticked
  8. Within section 3 of the New Mail Rule window, click the contains specific words link
  9. Within the Type Specific Words window, type *****SPAM***** within the Type specific words or a phrase, and click Add box
  10. Click Add
  11. Click OK
  12. Options

If you wish to delete all email marked *****SPAM***** from the server...

    1. Within section 2 of the New Mail Rule window, ensure Delete it from server is ticked
    2. Proceed to step 12

If you wish to download all email marked *****SPAM***** and store it in a separate folder...

    1. Within section 2 of the New Mail Rule window, ensure Move it to the specified folder is ticked
    2. Within section 2 of the New Mail Rule window, ensure Stop processing more rules is ticked
    3. Within section 3 of the New Mail Rule window, click the specified link
    4. Within the Move window, click New Folder
    5. Within the New Folder window, type SPAM in the Folder Name: box
    6. Click OK
    7. Click OK
  13. Within section 4 of the New Mail Rule window, delete the New Mail Rule #1 text and type SPAM
  14. Click OK
  15. Within the Message Rules window, click OK

Those are all the settings you need. Outlook Express 6 will now deal with email marked *****SPAM***** automatically for you!
