Windows XP: Creating a connection

Creating a Dial-Up Networking VICNET connection setting (New Connection Wizard)

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Control Panel 
  3. Click the Network and Internet Connections link (XP's Category View) or Network Connections shortcut (Classic View) 
  4. If you clicked Network and Internet Connections (XP's Category View), click the Network Connections link under the heading "or pick a Control Panel icon"
  5. From the left hand sidebar column, click the Create a new connection link
  6. Click Next 
  7. Select Connect to the Internet 
  8. Click Next
  9. Select Set up my connection manually
  10. Click Next
  11. Select Connect using a dial-up modem
  12. Ensure only one modem is selected
  13. Click Next 
  14. Within the ISP Name box, type VICNET
  15. Click Next
  16. In the Telephone number box, type the phone number of the VICNET access location closest to you
    • Apollo Bay: 52378000
    • Mallacoota: 51619100
    • Melbourne: 96574500
    • Megapop: 0198308006
  17. Click Next 
  18. Select Anyone's use 
  19. Click Next 
  20. Within the User name box, type your username
  21. Within the Password box, type your password
  22. Within the Confirm password box, type your password again
  23. Usernames and Passwords

    Your username and password are case sensitive - your username will always be in lowercase, whereas your password should be typed as shown on the documentation you've received.

    Your username is the first part of your email address, the part before the @ symbol e.g. jcitizen@vicnet.net.au

  24. EnsureUse this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer is ticked 
  25. Ensure Make this the default Internet connection is ticked 
  26. Ensure Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection is not ticked

    * VICNET does not support the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall at the present time - you may turn it on, however we cannot troubleshoot connections when this feature is turned on.

  27. Click Next
  28. Ensure Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop is ticked
  29. Click Finish

You have now created a basic Dial-Up Networking connection setting for dialling into VICNET. You now need to edit the connection setting to fine tune it for VICNET.
