Windows XP: Editing the connection

  1. From your desktop, double click on your VICNET Dial-Up Networking setting shortcut
  2. Click Properties 
  3. Ensure only one modem is selected 
  4. Ensure Use dialing rules is not ticked 
  5. Click the Options tab 
  6. Ensure that Include Windows logon domain is unticked 
  7. Ensure the Idle time before hanging up is set to never
  8. Click the Security tab 
  9. Within the Security options section, ensure Typical (recommended settings) is selected
  10. Within the Validate my identity as follows section, ensure Allow unsecured password is selected
  11. Click the Networking tab 
  12. Ensure the Type of dial-up server I am calling is PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet
  13. Click the Settings button
  14. Ensure Negotiate multi-link for single link connections is not ticked
  15. Click theOK button
  16. Under the This connection uses the following items section, ensure Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and QoS Packet Scheduler are ticked
  17. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  18. Click the Properties button
  19. Select Use the following DNS server addresses
  20. Within the Preferred DNS server box, type 203.10.72.1
  21. Within the Alternate DNS server box, type 203.10.72.25
  22. Click the Advanced button
  23. Click the DNS tab
  24. Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order)
  25. Click the Add button
  26. Within the Domain suffix box, type vicnet.net.au
  27. Click the Add button
  28. Click the Add button
  29. Within the Domain suffix box, type slv.vic.gov.au
  30. Click the Add button
  31. Ensure Register this connection's addresses in DNS is ticked
  32. Click the OK button
  33. Click the OK button
  34. Click the Advanced tab
  35. Ensure Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet is not ticked
  36. Ensure Allow other network users to connection through this computer's Internet connection is not ticked
  37. * This is not to say that you cannot use these facilities with VICNET, just that at the present time we do not support their use and will advise you to disable them before contacting us regarding connectivity problems
  38. Click the OK button 
  39. Your Windows XP based computer now has a Dial-Up Networking connection setting configured for connecting to VICNET. To connect now:

  40. Within the Connect VICNET window...
  41. Click the Dial button

If you cannot connect you may need to tweak your modem settings or use a script in your Dial-Up Networking connection setting. If you are not confident with either of these options, please contact VICNET Help and we can help you fine tune your VICNET Dial-Up Networking connection setting.
