Introduction to Vicnet's Domain Name Services

Welcome to Vicnet's domain name services. Vicnet can register and host your domain name for you.

When you register a domain name be sure that you keep all the relevant details in a safe place. The most important detail is the registry key. The registry key enables you to change the details of your domain name such as the ISP settings or your contact details. It is important to keep your contact details up to date.

Domain names must be renewed regularly, for example every one or two years. Ensure that you know where your domain name is registered and when it will be due for renewal. Be aware that scam companies will try and pursuade you to pay them extra for domain renewals, and wont necessarily deilver you any service at all.

Vicnet suggests the best and cheapest option for domain name renewals and registration is through MelbourneIT. Vicnet now registers all its domain names through MelbourneIT.

Once your domain name is registered, it needs to be hosted on the Vicnet servers. This is called DNS Hosting and carries a once only fee of $55.

Once your domain name is hosted on Vicnet, you can then choose to have a Virtual Web Server and Virtual Mail Server established. An annual fee of $330. If you just want virtual mail, the annual fee is $165. With both of these services you also receive two free mailboxes.

Domain Name Renewals with Vicnet

If your domain name is registered with MelbourneIT, then Vicnet offers a domain name renewal service. This makes your domain name registration status easier to manage. It also enables you to take advantage of Vicnet's discount prices for MelbourneIT renewals. To take advantage of this service, your domain name must be registered with MelbourneIT. You must also have either your virtual web server or virtual mail server hosted with Vicnet. Your domain name must also be on the Vicnet reseller account.

What do I do Next?

If your domain name is registered with MelbourneIT, Vicnet will contact you approximately 1 month prior to the renewal of your domain name. You will be asked to provide permission for Vicnet to renew your domain name, and for Vicnet to invoice or charge your credit card for the renewal fee. The cost of renewal is the same for registration, and these prices are listed above. Once Vicnet has received your permission to renew your name on your behalf, Vicnet will renew your name and will either invoice you or charge your credit card.

Update Your Contact Details with your Registrar

Its important that you regularly check the contact details listed with your domain name registrar to ensure that they are correct and up to date. Its advised to provide your registrar with a generic e-mail address for your domain name rather than a personal e-mail address. If a staff member is unavailable for any reason then having a generic e-mail address will ensure that you do not miss important information about your domain name.

Who Is My Registrar?

Your registrar is the operator of the registry with which your domain name is registered. For .AU domain name owners, you can find out who your registrar is by visiting the AusRegistry site http://www.ausregistry.com.au/ and using the WhoIs? function at the top of the page. For other domain names you can use the following sites http://whois.melbourneit.com.au/ or http://www.nsiregistry.net/whois/. For .ORG.AU names get your password from this site first: http://admin.auda.org.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already have a web page with Vicnet (or on another server), and just need to use my domain name. What do I do now?
You now need to request Vicnet to host your domain name and to create a virtual web server for you. You will then need to transfer your old page to the new server.
What do people get a domain name for?
the most common reasons are firstly marketing, and secondly prestige. A domain name makes your web site more easily marketable, but simply having a domain name alone has no impact on the marketing of your site. Many sites without domain names are more popular than most sites with domain names. A domain name gives your organisation more prestige and provides the impression that an organisation is more serious about what they do. On the other hand, if your organisation is not for profit, your funds might be better spent in another area of your IT requirements.
Due to problems with my current service provider, I need to transfer my domain name.
If you supply Vicnet with your domain name registry key, we can update your technical details for you, so that your domain name will be hosted at Vicnet. If you don't have your registry key, you can request one from the registry. It will be sent to the listed contact details. If you can keep your domain name hosted at your provider, simply provide them with the IP address of your new virtual web server at Vicnet.
