4 - MOVIE REVIEWS "Entrapment" and "The Mummy"

Entrapment is the film that enraged the Prime Minister of Malaysia with its portrayal of Malaysia's slums alongside the glittering Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the story Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones (who shares this reviewer's date of birth) run rings around their opponents and around each other, but no one really knows which side either is on.

More info, including viewing times:

Official Entrapment Site: http://www.foxmovies.com/entrapment/

The Mummy is the encapsulation of Indiana Jones, the English Patient, and Death on the Nile, along with a good dose of "Boy's Own" added in. The film invites sympathetic humour, but due to some of its scenes we advise that you do not have a meal shortly before or after a viewing!

5 - MALAYSIA'S SILICON VALLEY

Cyberjaya (jaya meaning progress) is a new technology zone located south of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia set to rival Silicon Valley. This is being promoted as a component of Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), and would be challenged in Asia only by rival location "Cyberport" in Hong Kong. Cyberjaya features a technology park inviting business investment, and the Multi Media University (MMU). Its twin city Putrajaya is developing as the new home for Malaysian government. Cyberjaya has been strongly promoted by the Communications and Multimedia Commission of Malaysia, but its success now depends upon investment from the IT industry. 14 - COMMUNITY SAFETY WEEK
5th - 11th September 1999

'Local Action For A Safer Community'

Community Safety Week is an award winning initiative of the Victorian Safe Communities Network (VSCN). In 1998, it won awards at both national and state levels.

This annual event is an essential component of community safety promotion. It provides an opportunity for state and local government and community agencies to develop partnerships and highlight community activities that make Victoria safer. In 1998, more than 200 Victorian community groups participated in the week.

Injury (intentional and unintentional) in our homes, at work and school, during sport and leisure activities, on the road and in public places is a significant cause of death, illness and disability in our community. Most of these deaths and injuries are pventable. All members of the community can take simple action to reduce the injury risks that we encounter in our daily lives. Community Safety Week provides a focus to celebrate achievements and conduct projects that contribute to a safer and healthier lifestyle.

17 - GLAUCOMA SUPPORT GROUP

The aim is to provide education, information and mutual support for Glaucoma patients, their families and friends. The group was set up with the support of the staff at the Glaucoma Unit at The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital (RVEEH).

Many people who have Glaucoma are not aware they have it until some sight loss has occurred. It is a condition where the pssure of fluid in the eye is usually high. There is only one certain way to know if you have Glaucoma - regularly see an eye specialist or optometrist to have your eye pssure, optic nerve and visual field checked.

Although you have no symptoms, untreated Glaucoma can eventually lead to total blindness. It is not widely known that untreated Glaucoma is a leading cause of pventable blindness. It has been estimated that over seventy million people worldwide have the condition.

18 - 1999: INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF OLDER PERSONS

The General Assembly of the United Nations, in assigning 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons, has drawn attention to the need to view ageing as a lifelong, positive process. The Principles of the United Nations are independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment and dignity. Countries around the world are encouraged to promote "A Society for All Ages in 1999".

Australian Coalition '99 was formally established in 1995 as part of the international network of Coalition '99, set up by American Association of Retired Persons. Australian Coalition '99 has become the major international linkage for the Australian non-Government involvement in the Year.

The aim of Australian Coalition '99 is to create linkages between the media, business, arts, rural and community sectors with a view to working on a united front towards creating an age-friendly society.

VICNET is an Australian Coalition '99 Partner.

24 - HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR WEBSITE

If you haven't already, these are ways to improve your site:

* include some "white space" on the page - don't fill every gap with content, or you create a wall of "stuff" that nobody can take in

* make your pages quick to load by keeping images small. If you must use large images, put them on a separate page, linking to them with a thumbnail image.

* Make sure thumbnail images have a small file size and load quickly, don't just use the same large image and alter the width & height to make it look smaller!

* Check all your links regularly - Websites are always moving! Broken links on your site create the impssion of an out-of-date, neglected site.

* Remember to add new content and update the site regularly - give surfers a reason to return to you site

* Be found! List your site for free with the search engines. They are listed at the VICNET search page: http://www.vicnet.net.au/search/ Just visit each site in turn and follow the "add URL" link.
