2 - CHANGING YOUR NUMBER
Many ISPs have until now connected to the phone networks using a system which is being phased out (Telstra is replacing 'Macrolink' with 'Onramp'). Thus we need to change the number you use to access the Internet.
The new number is 9657 4500.
This means that Vicnet's 9662 9999 pool will be closing in mid-April and the 9679 7500 pool will close in mid-May. You must change your computer's settings as soon as possible.
This page lists the different methods required to change the dial-in telephone number to the new Vicnet number: http://www.vicnet.net.au/help/misc/56kmanual.htm
For those who use the Windows 95 Dialler which comes with the operating system, or who obtained a Vicnet Windows 95-98 Kit, this is what you need to do:

7 - WOMEN'S WEB PROJECT
Women's Web is a project aimed at providing women in rural and isolated areas with training in the use of the Internet, as well as access to Internet services in their community. The project is funded through the Skills.net project, a project designed by the Victorian State government to provide all Victorians with Internet access.
Women's Web is designed to assist women to learn about the Internet by using a mentoring model, where local women acting as teachers and mentors assist and support others through the process of learning.
The area to be covered by the project ranges from Wodonga across Northern Victoria to Swan Hill and beyond. 1000 women are to be trained in the first year in basic Internet skills, and this training will take place in local schools, Neighbourhood Houses, Adult and Community Education Centres and other community venues.

8 - WESTERN MURRAY ONLINE AND MOBILE
A major need of community agencies is reliable and affordable technical support they can call upon. This is especially true in rural and remote regions.
To this end, VICNET has secured some funding from the Commonwealth Govt, through the Networking the Nation Program, to trial a mobile technical support unit in the Western Murray Region of Victoria (Mildura to Kerang and down as far as Hopetoun basically but flexible).
This service is being called Western Murray Online and Mobile and is being run by Joe Henry. Joe is now out and about in the Western Murray and there to help groups in the area. So if you are a group in this area or know of any groups in this area who would like a visit from Joe, just get them to contact joe at wmom@vicnet.net.au
or call 0408 134 404

9 - TILDE AWARDS 1999
The Victorian Tilde Awards are about awarding Victorian business and non-profit organisations for their efforts in online design and innovation. Last year there was a record number of nominated sites, and with thousands of registered votes we finally awarded 8 winners.
Following its success we are proud to host the awards again this year, for yet another fierce and exciting competition.
