4 - COMMUNITY SAFETY WEEK - September 5-11

Community Safety Week is an award winning initiative of the Victorian Safe Communities Network (VSCN). Injury (intentional and unintentional) in our homes, at work and school, during sport and leisure activities, on the road and in public places is a sign ificant cause of death, illness and disability in our community. Most of these deaths and injuries are pventable. All members of the community can take simple action to reduce the injury risks that we encounter in our daily lives.

Community Safety Week in Victoria features a number of local and state events, competitions, and public displays/events by a variety of agencies that have some connection with injury pvention and community safety promotion.

7 - SKILLS.NET VISIT TO THE USA
http://www.skills.net.au/association/usa_trip_rpt.htm

By: Adrian Bates, Skills.net Coordinator and Sandie Downey, Skills.net Roadshow Coordinator.

The Skills.net program began two years ago as a $5 million dollar program to seed fund community based organisations to setup ongoing community Internet access and training venues, aimed especially at members of the Victorian community who had never pvi ously used or been exposed to the Internet. The funding for Skills.net came from Multimedia Victoria. The day to day management of the project is handled by VICNET: Victoria’s Network.

The Skills.net trip to the USA (in July 1999) was a very worthwhile trip especially in terms of taking the Skills.net program to many communities across the USA and in confirming that the Victorian government, the State Library and VICNET really are leadi ng the world in community use of the Internet with innovative projects like Skills.net.

Read the report in full here:
http://www.skills.net.au/association/usa_trip_rpt.htm

A complete pictorial record of the USA trip can be found on the Skills.net Roadshow website at http://www.skills.net.au/roadshow - just click on the month of July.

8 - OVER 20,000 PEOPLE TRAINED!
http://www.nevernever.net.au/skillsnet/roadshow/

One of the most exciting initatives of the Skills.net program has been the creation of the Skills.net Roadshow. The roadshow has been travelling from one end of Victoria to the other working with local community organisations to promote and raise awarenes s of the Internet in local communities - showing people the benefits the Internet can bring to their life.

Over 20,000 people, mainly Victorians, have now received the benefit of Skills.net training :-)

9 - A SKILLS.NET PROJECT STORY

Another Day in the life of Newlands
by Clare and friends
Organisation: Newlands: Community, Education and Multimedia Centre

Today we're a week and a half after the official launch of the Newlands
Project, and I am asking what have I done wrong?

My name is Clare, I am 67 on Tuesday 31st, I am sitting next to Eddie who
is 87. In the same room is Max who is 66 and Florence who is 73. What a
collection we look. But at least we can say there is never a dull moment,
why should we sit in the noon day sun.

Today is a collective first or second session. All of us have had no
prior experience with computers. In my case I have been lent a computer,
to see if I want to buy one. At the moment this long term loan is sitting
in my unit in five pieces. Newlands is great for me to find out what to do
when I get it put together.

Florence was told about Newlands by a friend of hers. Max saw the sign
outside the house where Newlands is. Eddie saw an article in the local
paper. We enjoy helping each other, and I hope soon to be able to e-mail
my daughter in Canada. At the moment I want to find out why I keep loosing
the text on the screen...

12 - ENDING OFFENDING
http://www.ourmessage.org/

This site allows you, the public, an opportunity to see what goes on inside Northern Territory Correctional facilities. It also provides prisoners with an opportunity to address their offending behaviour in a positive and constructive way and to give some thing back to their community.

Alcohol-related offences account for approximately 75% of all imprisonments in the Northern Territory. Combined with a relatively high recidivism rate and a prisoner population consisting in the majority of Aboriginal people from remote and rural communit ies, the need to develop culturally appropriate and relevant alcohol interventions in the custodial setting is self-evident.

The Ending Offending 'Our Message' project repsents an innovative and collaborative approach to such interventions.
