School History (taken from "Vision and Realisation")

2393     This school, 9 miles S/E of Katamatite in the Parish of Yabba Yabba, was sought by Michael Dunn and others in July 1879, and recommended by DI (District Inspector) Lewis, who requested the erection of a portable classroom with quarters. So impatient were some parents for a school that they urged use should be made of a slab hut, with bark roof and earthern floor offered by J O'Donnell for a temporary school, but the department rejected this. The school opened on 1st May 1881 with Agnes Brown (1881-82) as HT. With attendances in the 1880's sometimes over 30 the small schoolroom frequently became crowded. Both school and quarters were destroyed by fire in November 1897. Michael Dunn lent a building, accepting no rent, but periodically demanding the vacation of the building for his own use, obviously to speed up the provision of a new building. Closed school 2209 Boosey South was brought to Youanmite, but lack of space, lighting and ventilation caused continual parental protests. S S 2393 closed in 1915.
2921     On 2nd November 1885 Allan McLean and 9 others petitioned for the establishment of a school to serve the central area of the parish. He was willing to give 2 acres in the S/W corner of his land as a site. The DI recommended that a portable with quarters should be provided and that 2 acres in the S/W corner of Allotment 6, Section C of George Cameron's land should be acquired as a site. He estimated that a NE (Enrolment) of 33 with an a.a. (average attendance) of 20 might be expected. But nothing further occurred until July 1888 when the Bible Christian Chapel was proposed as a temporary schoolhouse. This building, about 1 mile S of the recommended site and available for lease for £15 per annum, was a weatherboard structure, 22ft x 16ft x 13ft with matchboard lining but lacking a chimney. The Department decide to lease it for a year and to buy the Cameron site, now the property of Thomas Kilpatrick and five others. S S 2921 opened in the leased building on 30 April 1889 with Kate McDermott as HT. She remained for the next seventeen years. The trustees of the Chapel were Messers George Cameron, John Williams, M Moulsdale and William James. In August 1890 DI Dean recommended that no action be taken to erect a permanent building; that the site purchased be abandoned; that a new site of 1 acre be purchased from M Mousdale for £6. This was the S/E corner of Allotment 4, Section C and directly opposite the Bible Christian Chapel. All three recommendations were adopted.
The new site was 5 miles S/E of Naringaningalook, 3 miles N/E of 2192 Katandra North, 6 miles S/W of 2069 Katamatite and 6 miles N/W of 2393 Youanmite.
3641 Youanmite: Formerly Youanmite Township:
This was the last of three schools by the name of Youanmite to be established, but being close to a railway station, a post office and a general store it became the most enduring. Peter Ellis, a persistent advocate of its establishment had much of his correspondence forwarded to the minister through the Hon. George Graham, Minister of Agriculture. On 19th July 1909 he claimed that 41 district children lived 2 miles or more from any school. In September DI Stephenson recommended  that a full time school be established immediately and that for the time being the Church of England hall be leased as a school room for £10 per annum. The school officially opened on 1st January 1910 with Walter A Croft as HT. A permanent site of 2 acres with a frontage to Pederson St was purchased from Ellen Marie Jesperson for £16. In 1911 Peter Ellis was chairman and John Richardson the Correspondent for the committee. The reluctance of the church trustees to renew the lease, eventually forced the Department to erect its own building. The first proposal was to erect a tiny school 18ft x 14ft . Protests from parents caused the Department to agree to add another 6ft to the building. It was erected in August of 1913 with an a.a. (average attendance) of 20.
The word "Township" was dropped from the name in 1919 as the original Youanmite School had been closed in 1916 and the building removed. In 1922 the building was enlarged to 24ft x 21ft . In 1949, the committee purchased a residence which was situated 7 miles from Tungamah and re-erected it on a block opposite the school. The Department later purchased house and site from the committee. The Committee constructed a dam and erected a windmill in 1951 to supply water to both school and residence. W.J.Monaghan, HT from 25th of May 1948 to 8th of September 1953, was held in very high regard by the parents who worked very hard and spent a great deal of money in the interests of the school. The Committee also installed a home lighting plant for the school and residence in 1952.
The Youanmite School closed in 200? and the students were bussed to Invergordon S S No 4896
