WHAT IS ORAL HISTORY?

Oral history is a record of information gathered in oral form as the result of a planned interview. It is a means of finding out about the past by asking questions of people who have lived through a period, an event, or an experience of interest. The Oral History Association of Australia provides a friendly and informative forum for people interested in all aspects of the important and exciting technique of oral history.

The Oral History Association of Australia was formed in 1978 and has branches in each state. The Victorian Branch was formed in 1982. The objectives of the OHAA are -
  • to promote the practice and methods of oral history

  • to educate in the use of oral history methods
  • to encourage discussions on all aspects of oral history
  • to foster the preservation of oral history records.

The Victorian Branch of the OHAA publishes a state newsletter, Rewind, and holds meetings three times a year featuring guest speakers or panel discussions.  Annual events may also include oral history workshops and work-in-progress seminars.

State and regional OHAA conferences are held from time to time, and a National Conference is held every second year. These conferences provide opportunities for the discussion of oral history projects, methods and issues.
