GREETINGS FROM AN SGI Los Angeles member!!! This is a great website! I'm going to share it with my members now. We tried to access it after our district meeting the other day, but it failed to transmit. I decided to try again today, and it popped up! You've done a beautiful job. Hopefully someone here will start a local website soon. I'm sure you know a lot of addresses. If you'd like to know any websites in US, just let me know. I have a small list, all with links. I am a Women's Division District Leader in Diamond District. Our current campaign is a Global Family Festival performed and created by our Youth Division on March 14 & 15, commemorating March 16, 1958. It also commemorates the 5th anniversary of our receiving of Sensei's poem "The Sun of Jiyu over a New Land" which he gave to us following riots in our city. The performance will be a Multi-Media production with acting, dancing, moving video backdrops, slides, live & taped music. We have five Regions in our greater Los Angeles SGI, and each will do one act, all tied together. We're going "all out" to really support this activity as a great impetus toward the future of SGI-USA, the headquarters of which is in our city. This weekend our Region (Region 1) had a great "retreat" at an old time Hollywood era hotel. We had the whole hotel, and there were about 250 of us (I think), all district leaders and "up" were invited. We discussed current affairs in L.A. SGI, How to encourage youth, How to deal with the Temple issue, Proper Gongyo, and many many other things. It was very refreshing. We saw many old friends from even 20 years ago, and in the evening we had a DJ in the small "ballroom" and everyone rocked out!! Classy latin dancers with small Japanese pioneer members with shy young men's division with their exuberant compadres with crazy hiphoppers and so on. It was very much fun till 1:30 AM. We met again at 9 AM for Q& A and Open Mic. We also discussed the land use hearing for Soka University which will take place on February 5th in San Diego. The California State Coastal Commission must give final approval and we have a lot of oppositional Sansho Shima. We have been battling this for a longtime. Please send Daimoku over to San Diego on that day! Would it be your Feb 4th??? Supporters of Soka will attend the hearing to speak, in order to show the support of the community. I'm sure we will win in the end. This is a discussion of the original site in Los Angeles County, which has been greatly opposed by various factions. It is now being used as a graduate school and is currently affiliated with Harvard University in Boston. It's a most interesting story, however, because of this opposition, another city actually requested Soka University of America full undergraduate school to be built there (an hour and a half away drive-time) because they recognized the great value to their community. Grading is now being done and we're very excited. In the meantime, we need Daimoku for Feb 5. Our YWD MC called the Hotel Manager to the stage when we were finished, and we gave him a standing ovation for a wonderful time. He looked very sincerely appreciative and said that he had never experienced such a pleasant event in his 14 years at the hotel and insisted that it was really true. I believe he was definitely touched by the life of our organization, as he observed all of our activities and had a very seeking mind as to what we were about. We all hope you're enjoying yourself "Down Under"!!! I visited Sydney in 1987 with my family for a few days on holiday and I found it so charming!!! I hope to come back someday! My daughter's college roommate is on the US National Women's Soccer Team and she's hoping to go to the Olympics in Sydney. She's only 19, but she is fantastic in the sport. THE BEST TO YOU ALL!! Sincerely, BETH VIRANI Best regards, BETH VIRANI |

| (circulated from Elsie Fung from Hong Kong) | Monday 7th July 1997, South China Morning Post, Hong
Kong. by Alex Lo. "Kung fu experts and lion dancers fled when heavy rain broke out at a handover parade yesterday - while an all-girl band continued to play. The 2000-strong parade was on its last leg outside the New World Centre in Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, when the skies opened at about 12:20pm. The Men of the Yellow River, shirtless martial arts drummers and cymbal players from Shaanxi province who were leading the march, were the first to take refuge under the New World Centre flyover. But the girl band from the Buddhist Soka Gakkai International of Hong Kong kept playing. Piccolo playing Lau Wai-Ying, 18, said: 'I am not disappointed. We are proud we finished our programme.' Police estimated more than 8000 people gathered under overcast skies to watch the march."

> > Chheu Teal village, 30 kilometres from Phnom Penh and far from the main highway, was never noticed by potential donors. School principal Ros Rouen, one of only two men from Chheu Teal to complete high school in the late 1960s, had petitioned for support to his school, to no avail. Then, through a local businessman he contacted Soka Gakkai's Youth Peace Conference and the Kyushu branch collected hundreds of thousands of unused postcards in a "Post Aid" campaign to raise the funds to build a sturdy brick building which should last for many years. > > The old building was flimsy, without chairs and desks, so students had to study on the floor. Now there are chairs and desks for over 40 students in each of the five new classes. > > More than half of Cambodia's population is now aged under 15, so there is enormous strain on existing facilities, most constructed during the 1980s when class sizes were smaller. > > Soka Gakkai youth have supported other projects in Cambodia: a vehicle repair training school run by JVC (Japan International Volunteer Center), a UNESCO traditional silk weaving school and the "Voice Aid" campaign through which 280,000 used radios were donated prior to the country's 1993 > elections, so Cambodians throughout the country could receive information. > Soka Gakkai International, a Buddhist movement with over 12 million members in 128 countries and territories, is actively involved in > humanitarian activities. Dear All, This sounds wonderful. So much effort throughout the world, in so many different ways, making friends, sowing seeds. Wonderful. With gratitude Ted >hi Ted !!! >I'm very happy and excited to tell you that the Singapore Soka Association had achieved a great success in our National Day Parade !!! >The show we put up was indeed spectacular and wonderful event for the Singapore Soka Association because it is the best National Day Parade in all our years of participation !!!! I've also realise the awesome power of daimoku itself !!! Of all our trainings and rehersals , always the weather threatened to turn bad but only once did the thunderstorm occur during a training !!!! I've witnessed myself that during a few of the trainings when the dark clouds hovered above the training grounds when the training was about to commence , light drizzle did come but then after a matter of moments the rain stopped and the sight of the sky was indeed amazing , there were no clouds around the training grounds but the dark clouds were ominously surrounding the skies around the training grounds !!! On the actual day itself , rain fell early in the morning of the actual day !!! How mystical !!!! During the performance , there was no significant mistakes made it it seems near perfection on the televison itself !!! We never have expected the SGI colours to turn out to be so distinct and beautiful as during the rehersals and preview , the colours did not look good in the film !!! It was a great victory for all the SGI members in NDP 98 and I'm also very happy to report to Sensei that we had done and very good job in the NDP and we will do even better in the last NDP of this milennium , NDP 99!!! >Yours Truly > >Jianwen > |

- 1 - SGI-Malaysia prepares for Commonwealth games New Straits Times Aug 12, 1998 Massive show of co-ordination and creativity By: Sajahan Waheed You see this at most opening ceremonies of international sports meets - a colourful display of visuals on a massive scale cleverly formed by thousands in eye-catching costumes bearing flags and cards. From wherever you are sitting in the stadium, you get to enjoy the various visuals in the form of logos, symbols and flags which they create. Called "human graphics performance", it will be one of the highlights at the opening ceremony of the 16th Commonwealth Games, conducted by 5,000 members of Soka Gakkai Malaysia. This is a group which promotes cultural and social activities. Its honorary secretary Liu Cheng Choong said those taking part had been practising since last November. Their last big performance was the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1989. He said the graphics performance will display 228 images using 16 colours. Each scene will last for approximately one minute. They include the Commonwealth Games logo, the Wira mascot, the Malaysian flag and many other interesting visuals. The performers, ranging in age from 13 to 55, were recruited in January last year. Hi, Everyone! I am going to support this initiative and thought you might want to also. Thanks! Beth Received from Loretta MacNair: Ridgely Goldsborough has forwarded this to us... Can you be so kind as to forward this request to your mailing address list? THank you VERY much!!! Friends: In the work I'm doing right now I can see clearly how this small amount of effort on our part deeply impacts the lives of others we'll never see or know. Please take a minute of your time and send this e-mail! Bryan Phillips Subject: [Fwd: Universal Declaration of Human Rights] To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty International is collecting signatures for a pledge to support this very important United Nations declaration. Amnesty already has 3 million signatures (real and virtual) worldwide, and wants to get 8 million (which would be about 1% of the world's population). The UN Secretary General has already agreed to be present either in person or live by satellite, if he has to be in New York, to receive the pledge as a tangible statement of the people of the world's commitment to an international agenda of human rights. The most simple way to add your name to the pledge is to send an email to: udhr50th@amnesty.org.au. Put YOUR NAME in the SUBJECT and the following text in the message: "I support the rights and freedoms in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for all people, everywhere." | From: BVIRANI Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 06:27:59 EDT Subject: SGI Malaysia Creates History - From "The Star Online" Malaysia 9/12/98 |
This is an article copied from the Star Online Malaysia: Saturday, September 12, 1998 A feat to train 5,000 to perfection KUALA LUMPUR: Even before other athletes could start to break records, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM), the organisation doing the human graphics for the opening day, has broken its own record with the staging of a 5,000-member performance yesterday. Prior to this, its biggest show was the 1989 SEA Games when 2,000 members performed. The organisation made its debut in 1985 when 1,000 members took part in the Pan Malaysian Cultural Festival. As SGM has learnt, it was no easy task getting such a big group of people to co-ordinate their movements in many scenes, including the Selamat Datang mesage, dragons and village scenes, or the intricate designs of flying comets and glittering scenes with flashlights. Its director of operations Jimmy Sun Kien Keong, who shouted commands from the control room, said he was relieved when everything was over. "I have been having sleepless nights for the past few days," he said. Sun said he was under tremendous pressure before the big day because everything from logistics and food to motivation and contingency plans had to be taken care of before the show could be carried out. But the efforts were well worth it as spectators were kept spellbound by the team's domino effect as flags of different countries unfolded with a Wira changing his expressions each time. Their formations also depicted the many achievements of the country including the birth of the Proton Saga car to the Multimedia Super Corridor. The team even came up with a scene of the Petronas Twin Towers, the LRT and KL Tower in one take, drawing cheers from the crowd. Other breathtaking scenes included turtles swimming, parachutists descending and wayang kulit dances. In the end, they came up with 287 scenes of Malaysian lifestyles and achievements during the six-hour ceremony. Sun said he and his team, comprising creative directors, art directors from the advertising industry, doctors and computer analysts started work in 1996. "When we first performed in 1985 we had to plot every square which represented a performer manually. It took two to three months to complete less than 100 scenes. This improved in 1989 when we started using a computer. "For this show, computer analysts and programmers developed and designed a custom-made program that scans the designs into a computer which will plot the colour each performer wears during each scene," he said. The 5,000 members aged between 13 and 44 had been practising since last year, he said. "At first they practised in small groups, then they trained in Merdeka Stadium and finally here (National Stadium)," he said. Sun said 400 other members were involved in distributing and packing food for the participants, organising the team for toilet breaks, repairing flip cards and providing first aid. Sun said he had first seen human graphics performed in Japan during an SG International cultural festival, but he had adapted it and used his own "formula" to create what people in the Commonwealth countries witnessed yesterday.
